BIRDDOG II
This fuselage is based on the
original Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog (see below for a photo of a flying Bird
Dog), a liaison and observation aircraft that first flew on 14 December 1949.
Our project was dubbed the Birddog II because it is almost identical to the
original Bird Dog except that it is a shorter and stubbier design
for landing on short and rough landing strips. The project was started by two
builders who were building their second plane from scratch.. During the
construction of this project one of the builders was killed in an aircraft
accident. His partner decided to stop building at this point and donated
the fuselage to us. Both men were master welders, and we have included
sample photos of their welds. They put over $3,000 worth of tubing into
the fuselage at this point. The fuselage has the rudder pins, grommets for
flying wires, aileron pulleys, and rudder pedals with Cessna master brake
cylinders. The right side of the cockpit is designed for a fold down door.
Also included are two gear struts (one complete and one incomplete), a
steerable tailwheel, climb indicator, and two landing gear with Cessna wheels
and shafts. The plane is designed to easily accept a pair of Tri-Pacer wings.
